Big Win for MT Basketball Ahead of Vanderbilt Game

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A mid-state basketball rivalry turned into a route Tuesday night as the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders beat the Tennessee State Tigers 77 - 48 at Murphy Center.

Raymond Cintron led the Blue Raiders with 15 points, tying a career-high. MTSU's Marcos Knight, Neiko Hunter, and Shawn Jones also scored in double digits.

The MT men play one of the season’s most anticipated games Friday night when they meet Vanderbilt at Bridgestone Arena. Tipoff in Nashville is set for 8 p.m. with the game being televised on ESPNU.

Tennessee Colleges Adjust to New Funding Formula

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Anfinson) -- Record numbers of college freshmen are enrolled at state schools across Tennessee, but a legislative change in arithmetic means a new economy of results will replace the long-used economy of scale.

Enrollment at TBR colleges rose over 26 percent between 2001 and 2011. Prior to recent legislation, public funding was tied to student enrollment, but passage of the Complete College Tennessee Act changes that calculus. State appropriation is now based on retention and graduation rates rather than the number of students.

Fall Football Season Underway in Mid-State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The fall football season got underway Thursday night here in Middle Tennessee, with several mid-state teams starting the season at home.

The New Orleans Saints took no chances in their final pre-season game, resting all starters in a 10-6 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Vandy Hopes New Chaplain Can Ease Tensions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Vanderbilt University has hired a chaplain in the hopes of ending a lingering controversy over its new, non-discrimination policy.

The "all-comers" policy at the school requires student groups to allow any student to join their groups and to hold office, regardless of their beliefs.

Since then, Christian groups have protested the policy and several lost their official status for refusing to sign on to the policy.

Tennessee Artists Perform at Carnegie Hall

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Artists from Middle Tennessee will perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall this week.

The Blair String Quartet from Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music will premiere Michael Hersch's Images From a Closed Ward at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall Thursday evening. The program will also include a performance of Schubert's String Quartet No. 14, Death and the Maiden.

American-born composer Michael Hersch is a hot property in the classical music world right now.

MTSU Men Face UT, Women Play Vanderbilt

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A day and time has been announced for the MTSU/UT post season men’s basketball matchup.

The National Invitation Tournament game will tip off at 6 p.m. CT this Monday evening in Knoxville. Middle Tennessee State has won only a single game in nine meetings between the in-state rivals, but that lone win did come during an NIT game in 1988.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Tennessee joins 9 other states for Super Tuesday presidential primary voting tomorrow. As you’ve heard John and Celeste mention, Santorum and Romney are running neck-and-neck in several states.

The vote appears to be shaping up differently here in Tennessee. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum held a two-to-one lead over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in polls conducted recently by both the Survey Group at Middle Tennessee State University and the Vanderbilt Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions.

Astronomer Makes the Stars Sing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Astro Cantus is an I-phone app that gives voice to the stars.

The musical app is the brainchild of Rocky Alvey, Director of Vanderbilt’s Dyer Observatory in Nashville.

The application uses sky charts to assign musical values to the stars that are passing overhead at any given moment. At present, musical values are assigned according to the star’s brightness, but Alvey says most any astronomical data could be used.
