Gateway Chamber Orchestra Presents Appalachian Spring

The Gateway Chamber Orchestra presents the Appalachian Spring concert with two performances: Sunday, April 19, at 3 pm and Monday, April 20, at 7:30 pm. The GCO performs Luciano Berio’s intimate and colorful Folk Songs, a cycle of eleven folk melodies from around the world written in 1964.

Featuring mezzo-soprano Teresa Buchholz, Folk Songs was written to showcase vocal technique, flexibility and the beauty of the human voice. When Buchholz made her GCO debut in 2013, the Nashville press hailed the collaboration as “transcendent.”

The contemporary work, “Deep in Liquid Indigo” by Christopher Chandler, evokes the imagery of water with a variety of different musical sources and effects. Chandler is featured as the winner of the 2013 Gateway Chamber Orchestra Young Composer’s Competition (sponsored by the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts) and was a winner of the 2013 BMI Student Composer Award. The concert concludes with two of the most iconic American works, Barber’s poignant Adagio for Strings and Copland’s famous Appalachian Spring. The GCO performs Aaron Copland’s original score with thirteen musicians, providing a breathtakingly clean and sparkling version of Appalachian Spring.

Tickets for this performance can be purchased by phone at (615) 712-3683 or (931) 444-6240 or online at gatewaychamberorchestra.com.
