NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT)  --  Marsha Blackburn won a grueling, expensive contest to become the first female U.S. senator from Tennessee.

The congresswoman defeated Democratic former Gov. Phil Bredesen yesterday by closely aligning her bid with President Donald Trump.

During her victory speech Tuesday night, the self-described “card-carrying Tennessee conservative” committed to pushing the president’s agenda forward.

“They want leaders who are going to be there to work with the president and keep this nation on the path to prosperity that we are on today.”

In his concession speech, Bredesen, thanked the large number of young Tennesseans who turned out to cast ballots.

“I just really want those young people to know how important it is to the future of our country that you not get discourage, that you stay engaged, and that you never, ever, ever give up.”

An analysis of early voting by the group TargetSmart noted that the number of Tennesseans 29 an under who cast ballots this election increased by 700 percent over the 2014 midterms.
