NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE) -- Metro Nashville voters weighed in on six amendments to the city charter Tuesday. Five of those measures passed.
Voters rejected a proposal to extend Metro Council member term limits.
Metro voters agreed to amendments that create a line of succession for the city mayor and vice-mayor, set conditions for mayoral special elections, and require city leaders to uphold the city charter. They also approved making the charter itself gender neutral.
Amendment One was the most controversial and most closely watched proposal. It passed with wide support. The measure directs Metro to create a civilian oversight board for Nashville Police.
The group Community Oversight Now put the Amendment on the ballot. Spokeswoman Gicola Lane says the committee will have several regulatory tools at its disposal, but not the ability to fire officers for misconduct.
“We do have the ability to compel witnesses, and we will have investigators as part of our staff. As far as hiring and firing, we have the ability to send over recommendations.”
Those recommendations will go to Nashville Civil Service Commission which does retain the authority to fire officers for inappropriate actions.
