In a sense, accuracy is the most important standard WMOT Radio sets for the material it transmits. We cannot expect our listeners to obtain a better understanding of themselves and the world if the information we transmit does not conform to that world. To obtain accuracy, we must approach our task with neutrality and integrity. In addition, however, accuracy requires professional craftsmanship of the highest standard at all stages of production.

B. NEUTRALITY

WMOT Radio's insistence on total neutrality does not mean our output must be bland. Indeed, as a place where many views and tastes are respectfully heard, WMOT Radio jealously guards its neutrality, and hence its vitality, by insisting its own staff and all others appearing in a reportorial role strive for objectivity in their work.

C. INTEGRITY

In the simplest terms, integrity means WMOT Radio will not lie or willfully mislead. This applies in our dealings with our audience as well as with our sources.
 

D. PROPRIETY

WMOT Radio tries to operate within the standard of what is socially acceptable in conduct or speech, which is the definition of propriety. Our goal is to communicate, and to do so we must present our material in a manner that makes the audience receptive rather than hostile. We will never needlessly offend. To do so is self-defeating. But to say we will not do so needlessly does not mean we will never offend.

• For one thing, standards of decorum and language vary widely in a pluralistic nation.
• A less frequent problem is that accurate communication may require presentation of language that is offensive to a large part of the audience.
• In such instances, WMOT Radio conscientiously weighs the relative importance of the language in maintaining our two values of accuracy and propriety, both of which we value highly.
