| Current Challenges Two set of funding challenges face WMOT today.
The first is the reduction in funding from the State of Tennessee. State dollars are scarce -- and every dollar possible must go to meet the educational needs of our students. Beginning with the July 1, 2003 budget, the MTSU share of the WMOT operational expense budget was cut in half. We'd been working to reduce costs for a number of years, but this cut really crimps our operational efforts. The possible loss of half of our CPB federal Community Service Grant adds to our list of challenges. This grant has helped cover many of the non-salary investments in WMOT's equipment, maintenance, and program expense areas. The combined effect is to place WMOT in the position of replacing $80,000 annually. Currently we raise about $75,000 from non-University or federal sources. For the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2004, our total goal is to raise at least $150,000. We say "at least" for we are unsure of additional reductions in governmental funding as of this writing. Long-term Opportunities
In addition to the Annual Giving Campaign that keeps the lights on and the jazz flowing, WMOT is undertaking the challenge of developing programs for capital replacement of equipment and the conversion to digital broadcasting. We are also working on a WMOT Endowment to help fund annual operational needs in the future. Both campaigns are coordinated with the Middle Tennessee State University Foundation. As with all gifts to WMOT, there will be tax advantages for our benefactors. Here is an excerpt from the Foundation's web site. Planned Giving Planned giving refers to financial strategies that allow donors to achieve their charitable visions through long-term planning. Making a planned gift to Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) distinguishes you as a lifetime member of the Heritage Society. By including MTSU in your estate plan, you are making an investment in higher education that will benefit generations to come. MTSU offers an active charitable estate planning program which provides donors with information and assistance in achieving their charitable giving goals in the most efficient manner. Charitable estate planning is the matching of the donor's goals and desires with MTSU's opportunities and priorities by using various planning techniques. A charitable estate plan may include outright gifts, testamentary (through the donors will), or life income arrangements which provide a lifetime income for the donor or designated beneficiary.
