MTSU ROTC Commissions 11 into Three Branches of the Military

MTSU’s military science ROTC program commissioned 11 senior cadets as second lieutenants into three branches of the military during ceremonies May 4 at the Veterans Memorial outside the Tom H. Jackson Building.

Attended by family and friends, MTSU faculty, staff and administrators, alumni and others, the 11 new commissionees heard remarks from alumnus and U.S. Army Lt. Gen. William N. “Bill” Phillips, who is a 1976 graduate who is principal military deputy to the assistant secretary of the Army in Acquisition Logistics and Technology and director in Acquisition Career Management.

MTSU Hurling Club Camp May 12-13

Jamie Norris Versus Purdue

The MT Hurling Club, the only hurling club in Tennessee, will sponsor a hurling camp and tournament May 12 and 13 at the MTSU Sport Club Complex, 2111 E. Main St. in Murfreesboro.

Curling club members, most of whom are MTSU students, will demonstrate the fast-paced ancient Irish sport, which involves elements of baseball, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse. Camp activities are slated for the morning sessions, and tournament action is scheduled each afternoon.

Mac Dara Mac Donncha, an award-winning hurler for Galway and Waterford in Ireland, will head the coaching staff. A fully qualified Level One Tutor, Donncha has tutored many games throughout his southern Ireland province of Munster.

MTSU Alumnus Phillips Speaks at May 4 Commissioning Ceremony

Alumnus and U.S. Army Lt. Gen. William N. “Bill” Phillips will serve as guest speaker for the spring 2012 MTSU Department of Military Science ROTC commissioning ceremony.

The event will be held Friday, May 4, starting at 10 a.m. at the MTSU Veterans Memorial on the south side of the Tom H. Jackson Building. The public is invited.

Eleven senior cadets will be commissioned on the eve of their graduating from MTSU on Saturday, May 5. Six of the cadets will be commissioned active duty, one commissioned to the Army Reserves and four commissioned to the National Guard.

Major Step for Women's, Gender Studies Part of Graduation

In addition to the awarding of the 100,000thundergraduate degree in its history, MTSU will make more history Saturday, May 5, with the graduation of its first Women’s and Gender Studies certificate recipients.

Students who completed the program and will receive their degrees this Saturday will mark the occasion by wearing special purple, red and silver cords as part of their graduation regalia.

The 18-credit hour program, which was instituted in the spring 2011 semester as part of the University’s Centennial Celebration, is designed for individuals pursuing careers in which expertise in women’s and gender issues can help them advance professionally. These include careers in health care, education, legal and social services and in the nonprofit sector.

Recording-Industry Students’ Creativity Pays Off With National Award

Winners of the Fantastic Scholastic Recording Competition

A three-student team from Middle Tennessee State University is this year's grand-prize winner of the eighth annual “Fantastic Scholastic Recording Competition” sponsored by Shure Inc.

Taylor Bray, who graduated in December, and seniors Jeff Braun and Grant Hartford won the 2012 contest for their production of an original composition by aspiring singer-songwriter Rebecca Roubion, “Falliday.”

The recording-industry majors worked with faculty adviser Michael Fleming, an associate professor in MTSU's Department of Recording Industry.

MTSU Professor Discovers New Use for Dental Technology

Research by Dr. Shannon Hodge, assistant professor of anthropology at MTSU, could provide archaeologists with a new way to investigate the past while respecting the wishes of living Native Americans for the treatment of their ancestors’ remains.

“The human skeletal remains contained in these burials can be closely examined to reveal patterns of past health and nutrition and to illuminate some of the social, economic and political impact on past people’s lives,” notes Hodge.

With existing computer-aided technology used by dentists for restorations such as crowns, Hodge produced replicas of human teeth for study so that the natural teeth could be returned to the grave.

We are down to the final 2 days of the ABAS Annual Plant Sale at the Horticulture Center, located on Blue Raider Drive across from the  TN Livestock Center (adjacent to the three satellite dishes).

Students taking ABAS 3600 raised the plants and funds are used for scholarships.

MTSU Volunteers Join Habitat for Humanity Dedication Ceremony

Middle Tennessee State University volunteers will be on hand for the formal dedication of a new family home on East Sevier Street constructed by Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity—the third such home built by the University and Habitat.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m.

In January 2006 MTSU students began fundraising efforts through various programs for the first MTSU Habitat Blitz Build. 2012 will mark the completion of the third home built for a Rutherford County resident by MTSU and Habitat.

MTSU's Centennial Habitat Build began Jan. 25. The house cost $60,000 to build with $20,000 being funded by members of the MTSU community. Other contributions came from supporters who wanted to help but were unable to physically participate in the build, organizers said.
