O'Connor Speaks to Overflow Crowd at MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor spoke to an overflow crowd here on the campus of Middle Tennessee State last night.

WMOT student reporter Charity Dunn was there and says the lecture hall filled early and a line formed for an overflow room with a video feed.

The former justice, and the first woman appointed to the nation’s highest court, gave a wide-ranging and surprisingly entertaining talk that had the crowd laughing repeatedly. O’Connor shared a number of biographical details, including memories of her childhood.

MTSU Honors Three "Unsung Heroes" at Unity Luncheon

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  It's a special week here on the campus of Middle Tennessee State.

On Tuesday, MTSU will be hosting its annual Black History Month Unity Luncheon. This year's theme is "Unsung Heroes."  Three women will be honored at the gathering, including Thenartis Ellis, Mary C. Scales and Olivia Murray Woods.

Ellis was the first African-American hired in a departmental office at MTSU. She worked as a secretary in the Department of Economics and Finance for 36 years.

1100 Employees Losing Jobs

Food Lion Closing Middle Tenn. Stores

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The company that owns and operates Food Lion grocery stores is closing 25 groceries in Tennessee idling about 1,100 workers. The company is also reducing operations at a distribution center in Clinton near Knoxville.

Food Lion spokeswoman Christy Phillips-Brown says a severance package is being offered to eligible employees affected by the parent company's decision to close underperforming stores.

Aggravated Burglary, Assault and Weapons Charges

MTSU Student Arrested for Armed Robbery

 

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.  --  New developments Tuesday in last week’s armed robbery here on the campus of Middle Tennessee State.

Police have arrested an MTSU student in the case. Eighteen year-old Christopher Hendrix turned himself in to authorities after campus Police obtained arrest warrants charging Hendrix with Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Assault and Carrying Weapons on School Property.

Police said Hendrix told them last week’s incident in a Scarlett Commons apartment began when he and the victim got into a fight over a drug deal.

Student Pistol-Whipped by Assailant

MTSU student Injured During Armed Robbery

MURFREESBORO -- A Middle Tennessee State University student was injured Tuesday night on campus during an armed robbery.

MTSU issued an emergency alert at 8:48 Tuesday evening saying that a robbery had taken place outside Scarlett Commons. It was later learned the robbery actually took place inside one of the apartments.

Poverty in U.S. Higher Than Thought

Murfreesboro, Tenn  (AP-WMOT)  New census estimates out today show the number of Americans living in poverty is higher than ever - reaching a new peak of more than 49 million poeple, or 16 percent of the population.

The new numbers are higher than the official 2010 poverty rate of 15 percent that was reported in September.
