NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — This is Tennessee's annual Earthquake Awareness Week, which includes the second annual Great Central U.S. ShakeOut drill.

The drill at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday morning will mark the 200th anniversary of the largest of the great New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812, which created West Tennessee's Reelfoot Lake.

A spokesman for Tennessee Emergency Management says, even this far east, we will feel a big quake’s impact.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The Blue Raider men and women both pulled out hard won victories last night over North Texas in Denton. 

The MTSU men's basketball team withstood a late rally by the Mean Green to hold on for a 68-66 victory. The men now have a 21-3 overall record and a 10-0 standing in the Sun Belt Conference, marking the best league start in school history. 

The Lady Raiders game also went down to the wire, with the MT women eaking out a 70-68 victory to extend their winning streak to 12 games.

NASHVILLE, Tenn (AP/WMOT) — A proposal that seeks to prevent Occupy Nashville protesters from staying overnight on the plaza next to the state Capitol advanced in the Tennessee General Assembly yesterday.

The measure sponsored by Republican Rep. Eric Watson of Cleveland was approved on a voice vote in the House Judiciary Subcommittee. The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Registered campus groups at Vanderbilt University are no longer permitted to bar students who don't share the groups' mission or beliefs from leadership positions.

That non-discrimination policy was reiterated at a packed campus meeting Tuesday night. A university spokesperson says all students must be able to join a student group and run for leadership positions in order for it to be registered.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  --  What will religion and spirituality look like in years to come?  That’s the big question being explored this weekend during the “Big I” conference being held at the Wisdom House at the Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville.

More than 20 speakers from across the nation and representing different faith backgrounds will be on hand to offer their insights. The conference will include both formal presentations and opportunities for attendees to interact with the featured speakers.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The Tennessee Environmental Council is looking for volunteers to join them in planting 3000 trees this weekend in Murfreesboro.

The effort is part of a larger campaign to plant 1 million trees in Tennessee.

Council Executive Director John McFadden notes that trees can improve property values, cut down on soil erosion, and even reduce instances of some illnesses.
