A Murfreesboro "Home Away from Home" for Tennessee Vets

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  As the nation marks the 71st anniversary of Japan’s December 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, construction is getting underway in Middle Tennessee for a “home away from home” for Tennessee veterans.

The Tennessee affiliate of the Fisher House Foundation is building a home on the grounds of the VA Hospital in Murfreesboro. Once completed, the Fisher House will provide lodging for up to 12 veterans under treatment at the hospital and their families.

Tenn. Vets Donating Their Stories to MTSU's Gore Research Center

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) —Gov. Bill Haslam has declared this Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Week in Tennessee.

The governor notes that more than 200 Tennesseans are still missing in action since World War II. No one is sure just how many Tennesseans are former Prisoners of War.

The U.S. Veteran's Administration says that World War II era vets are now dying at the rate of more than 700 a day. To ensure that their stories are preserved, researchers at Middle Tennessee State University have been conducting oral history interviews with vets for several years.

Tennessee POW/MIA Honored with State Declaration

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and state Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder have declared this week as Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Week.

Commissioner Grinder is a military veteran herself, having served most recently in Afghanistan. She says she recently had opportunity to attend a luncheon meeting of Tennesseans who are former POWs.

Veteran's Workshop Tuesday at Nashville Armory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Middle Tennessee Congressional Rep. Jim Cooper is hosting a free veterans workshop Tuesday at the Tennessee National Guard Armory in Nashville.

More than 40 government agencies and private organizations will be on hand to provide assistance with things like GI benefits, home loan guarantees, benefits and pensions, small business loans, homeowner financing, employment training and educational opportunities.

The workshop is billed as a veterans event, but Congressman Cooper says active duty personnel and family members might also wish to attend.
