"Rally for Religious Freedom" Held Friday in Nashville

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Nashville is one of 129 cities nationwide holding rallies Friday afternoon in opposition to the Obama administration’s health care law.

Today marks the second anniversary of the "Patient Care and Affordable Protection Act" of 2010.

WSMV-TV reports that organizers for the Nashville event are calling it "Rally for Religious Freedom." The rally got underway at noon on the capital grounds.

Among the scheduled speakers is the head of the Catholic Church in Nashville, Bishop David Choby. Choby says Catholic Bishops in the U.S. are especially concerned about a new mandate that requires faith-based institutions to provide contraceptive health-care coverage for their employees.

“It’s not a particularly Catholic issue, the Southern Baptists and other religious are as concerned about the mandate as the Catholic Church is because it intrudes into the understanding and the application of our moral and our doctrinal beliefs.”

Other speakers for the event include Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Dr. Carol Swain, a Vanderbilt law professor, and Tennessee Congresswoman Diane Black.
