On a sunny late afternoon last September, the band Nefesh Mountain prepared to take a stage in front of the North Carolina state capitol. They could see a half mile down Fayetteville Street, where tens of thousands of people mingled and moved among eight different stages at Raleigh’s Wide Open Bluegrass festival. A good crowd was left over from the prior act. It seemed like an ideal setting, but singer Doni Zasloff suddenly got uncharacteristically anxious.

Siobhan Kennedy is an enthusiastic music diplomat between those two nations famously divided by a common language. Raised in Liverpool, England, hometown of the Beatles and Echo & the Bunnymen, she’s a one-time recording artist, a long-time Nashvillian, and wife of record producer Ray Kennedy. She’s also a board member of the Americana Music Association UK, which recently had its fourth convention and awards in London. Early this year, she said strong ties between the US and UK scenes had created a potent situation.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE)  --  Months of escalating tension over the leadership of Nashville Public Schools came to a head Tuesday night as Schools Director Shawn Joseph announced that he will not seek an extension to his current contract.

The announcement came on the same day the Tennessee Department of Education revealed it will recommend that Dr. Joseph’s teaching license be suspended for one year. The action comes in response to the system’s failure to report a dozen teacher misconduct incidents as required by law.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE)  --   State lawmakers have this week stripped language from a House bill that would have required development officials to disclose the size of offers they make to entice companies to land in Tennessee.

The proposal comes in the wake of public unease over the $102 million in grants and tax incentives the state recently offered to Amazon. Failed development deals with Electrolux and Hemlock Semiconductor also raised concern.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (OSBORNE)  --  The number of Tennessee farmers seeking a license to grow hemp is exploding.

The state Department of Agriculture reports it’s  ssued nearly 2800 hemp production permits this year, with still more applications in the pipeline. That’s ten times the number of licenses issued in 2018.

Hemp’s introduction hasn’t been without complications. There have been persistent reports of police mistaking hemp products for marijuana. There have also been reports of hemp supplement users failing workplace drug tests.

Thailand's election commission has released the unofficial vote count from Sunday's election – the country's first since before the military seized power in 2014.

The results show Palang Pracharath, the pro-military party allied with the ruling junta, winning 8.4 million votes. The opposition party, Pheu Thai, won 7.9 million. A new opposition party called Future Forward had a strong showing with just over 6 million votes.

Even therapists need someone to talk to sometimes. Lori Gottlieb is a psychotherapist who started seeing a therapist herself five years ago, when the man she thought she would marry unexpectedly broke up with her, shattering her sense of the present and the future.

"My reaction was the reaction of everybody that I told at the time, [which] was, 'This guy's a jerk! You dodged a bullet!' Gottlieb says. "But once I go to therapy I start to see — or I'm forced to see — the situation, and my role in it, too."

The U.S. Supreme Court officially denied an appeal from gun makers seeking to stop a Trump administration ban on bump stocks, the gun add-ons that can dramatically increase their rate of fire. The ban went into effect on Tuesday.

Gun makers had filed separate appeals to Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, requesting a temporary hold on the ban. Roberts denied one appeal earlier this week; Sotomayor referred hers to the full court, which denied it on Thursday, allowing the ban to proceed while challenges to it move through the courts.
