WMOT Friends Gather For An Evening of Grace

Berry Hill is the little music row many people don't know about, a cozy neighborhood next to 100 Oaks where magic is made on a regular basis, usually witnessed only by the industry insiders rolling the tape. So it felt particularly on-brand when WMOT welcomed about 20 new listener members to one of the district's most elite recording studios for an exclusive live session by Grace Potter on Monday night.

Guitar and dobro pair well and play well together. Both instruments excel at harmony, rhythm and lead playing, and the sliding resonator guitar has an especially cutting and emotional voice. Usually one finds guitar and dobro nested inside a bluegrass band, not out front as the heart of a roots duo. It was a combination just waiting for the right musicians, and nobody could be better qualified than Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley.

On The String: The Bluegrass Episode

Nov 6, 2019

I first got into bluegrass in the mid 1980s by way of a compilation tape, a sampler of recent releases from Rounder Records that included tracks by Don Stover, Del McCoury, Hazel &Alice, David Grisman and more. This variety pack helped me hear range and diversity in what I'd perceived as a narrow, sound-alike genre. That, or a festival, is a great way to access the tradition. This week's String, taped in September at World of Bluegrass in Raleigh, NC, is a kind of mix tape too.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is officially joining the 2020 Democratic presidential race less than three months before voters start casting ballots.

"I admire and respect the candidates in the Democratic field. They bring a richness of ideas and experiences and depth of character that makes me proud to be a Democrat. But if the character of the candidates is an issue in every election, this time is about the character of the country," Patrick said in an announcement video published online Thursday morning.

Ten Democratic candidates will debate next week in the fifth primary face-off, which has increasing importance, with presidential hopefuls set to face voters in fewer than three months.

The new movie The Report — which comes out Friday and tells the true story of a U.S. Senate staffer who doggedly investigated the CIA's use of torture after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks — is a look back on a controversial part of our country's past. But the CIA's torture program continues to have huge implications at the U.S. military court and prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where 40 accused terrorists are still being held.

MURFRESSBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Human remains have been found during the search for a Tennessee teen who vanished in 2017.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Middle Tennessee wide receiver Zeke Cobb has been suspended from the program as he faces rape charges.

Murfreesboro police spokesman Larry Flowers said Tuesday that Cobb has been served a sealed indictment on two counts of rape stemming from an incident in 2018. Flowers didn't have any additional details on the case.

Rutherford County sheriff's spokeswoman Lisa Marchesoni said the 21-year-old is being held at Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $60,000 bond. A court hearing is set for Nov. 26.

Nashville Business Journal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE)  -- A new study suggests Nashville commuters will soon encounter a whole new level of gridlock if the city can’t get a handle on downtown traffic.

The Nashville Business Journal recently compiled the traffic data generated by some of the city’s largest development projects, including the Amazon facility, Asurion’s new HQ, offices for Alliance/Berntein, and the HCA relocation.

Reporter Meg Garner says those projects and a few others could generate more than 200,000 new, daily vehicle trips into the urban core within two years.
