MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A college freshman was recently named one of the mid-state’s top entrepreneurs.

Matt Matlock is the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce Youth Entrepreneur of the Year.  Matlock was one of 15 individuals and organizations to receive this year’s NEXT awards, honoring the area’s groundbreaking entrepreneurs and top performing companies.

Matlock launched his first business while a sophomore at Nashville’s Pearl Cohn High School.  He formed a company called Unshatter that repaired cell phones and tablet computers.

Matlock grew up in foster care.  He attended a different school each of his four High School years. He says he thinks poverty and his foster care experience spawned his entrepreneurial spirit.

“As I moved around so many different places, I’ve had to learn to adapt in many different situations. What I’ve found is that entrepreneurship is very similar to that. I’m doing the same thing I’ve done all my life: I’m adapting to the market.”

Matt Matlock is currently a freshman and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville studying Business Management.
