ALIAS Chamber Ensemble - Bringing a World Premiere to Life

“Amorisms”: For clarinet, string quartet, and SSATB voices
A Collaborative Commission and a World Premiere

It’s not every day you get to help create a new CD commission, especially the recording of a World Premiere by a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. But today we invite you to join ALIAS Chamber Ensemble and Nashville's Portara Chamber Ensemble in recording "Amorisms", by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec. Commissioned by ALIAS, Portara and Nashville Ballet, this mesmerizing new work for clarinet, string quartet and SSATB voices will premiere at our Spring Concert on May 7, 2014, at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. ALIAS will contribute 100% of the proceeds from this concert to our “spotlight” nonprofit partner, STARS (Students Taking a Right Stand).

You Can Help Bring this New Work to Life

Wherever you live, and however much you can afford to contribute, ALIAS welcomes you to share in bringing this World Premiere to life. In addition to the Spring Concert, “Amorisms” will be performed by the Nashville Ballet during their “Emergence” performance series May 29-31. This unique, visceral musical experience is typical of the artistic collaboration that is an important part of our ALIAS mission. It’s an investment that ALIAS shares passionately with supporters like you.

By taking part in this creative collaboration, you will have the satisfaction of contributing to something that will last well beyond the World Premiere.

Funds will support the recording & copying costs, the commission fee, and composer Paul Moravec’s travel and expenses during the recording. Every penny raised from our IndieGoGo campaign will be spent on recording, commissioning, and program-related costs.

Your Generous Gift

Why not make a contribution as a unique gift to honor someone special? Gifts at $250 and above will include your name on the “Amorisms” CD cover jacket. Please email us at jim@aliasmusic.org if you would like to designate someone else’s name.

Your contribution is tax-deductible.

Creative Collaborators

This creative collaboration would not be possible without supporters like you. We hope you will join us in bringing “Amorisms” to life. Learn about our other creative collaborators below.

ALIAS Chamber Ensemble

Well, ALIAS doesn't like to brag, but our first CD, Hilos, was nominated for a Grammy. But our mission goes beyond winning awards. ALIAS is dedicated to innovative repertoire, artistic excellence, and a desire to give back to the community. Part of our mission is to bring audiences a mix of chamber music that cannot be heard anywhere else. We adopt three nonprofit partners each season, and we share the spotlight with one nonprofit at every series performance. This “spotlight” nonprofit partner has the opportunity to share its message with the audience, and receives 100% of the proceeds from that concert…no strings attached.

Paul Moravec

Paul Moravec, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Music, has composed over 100 orchestral, chamber, choral, lyric, film, and electro-acoustic compositions. His music has been described as “tuneful, ebullient and wonderfully energetic” (San Francisco Chronicle), “riveting and fascinating” (NPR), and “assured, virtuosic” (Wall Street Journal). His music has earned many distinctions, including the Rome Prize Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, three awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia University, he has taught at Columbia, Dartmouth, and Hunter College and currently holds the unique position of University Professor at Adelphi University.

Portara Choral Ensemble

Portara Choral Ensemble has quickly become a creative force in the music scene of Middle Tennessee. Their innovative programing and artist collaborations have crossed the boundaries of visual and performing arts, and brought exciting new music to their audiences.  Led by founder-director Shreyas Patel, Portara Ensemble’s thought-provoking thematic choral programs explore a wide variety of music from around the globe sung by professional, semi-professional, and amateur volunteer singers. Since its inception in 2010, Portara Ensemble’s mission has been to bring new and important choral works to the audiences of Middle Tennessee while integrating additional forms of performing and visual art into each concert series.

Nashville Ballet

Since its founding in 1986, the Nashville Ballet has grown to become the largest professional ballet company in Tennessee, presenting a varied repertoire of classical ballet and contemporary works by noted choreographers, including original works by Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling. Nashville Ballet’s history of consistent growth and steady expansion is a credit to the dedicated artists and philanthropists who worked tirelessly to bring the art of ballet to Nashville. Those visionaries worked diligently to bring this classical art form to a city that was already well on its way to becoming a cultural hub.

Please take a look at the various ways you can help us bring “Amorisms” to life. We welcome contributions at all levels, and you can get involved for just $15. For $50, you will receive your own “Amorisms” CD, with the cover jacket signed by the composer, Portara, and the ALIAS musicians. For $250, your name will be displayed on the jacket on the new CD. What a great opportunity to honor someone special!

All contributions will receive a tax receipt.
