Top 2018 Legislative Issues: Moms Demand Action

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE)  --  The Tennessee General Assembly gets underway this week.

WMOT is exploring the legislative priorities of some of the state’s leading political voices. Today we hear from the group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

Kat McRitchie speaks for the Tennessee Chapter.

“Ninety-three Americans die every day of gun violence…This year and every year, until no Americans and no Tennessee’s suffer gun violence, we will work to protect the Second Amendment while also keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people.”

McRitchie says the organization supports a bill already filed in the Tennessee legislature that would ban so-called bump stocks…the devise that allowed the Vegas gunman to fire so many rounds so quickly.

McRitchie sasy MDA would also support any effort to strengthen the nation’s gun purchase background check system.

Neither issue is likely to gain any traction in the Tennessee Legislature where Republicans hold a supermajority in both chambers.

In fact, because 2018 is an election year, GOP lawmakers will almost certainly introduce legislation meant to dramatically expand firearms right-to-carry regulations.

McRitchie says MDA will oppose any such effort for public space where children are present.

“We will oppose the expansion of guns in sensitive places, like schools, churches, places where there are children present in public spaces.”
