Early voting participation off sharply in Tennessee
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- With Tennesseans heading to the polls today, the State Coordinator of Elections is making early voting results available.
Statistics provided by Elections Coordinator Mark Goins indicate that the number of Tennesseans taking advantage of early voting was off by about 15 percent from the 2012 election.
Records indicate that 629,485 Tennesseans cast their ballot in early voting which ended Thursday.
Every county in Middle Tennessee saw a drop in its early voting numbers. Statewide, 86 of the State’s 95 counties saw fewer early voters.
Shelby County saw one of the state’s sharpest drops in early voter turnout with the number of ballots cast dropping by roughly 25 percent over 2012.
Here in Rutherford County, early voting totals fell by just under 8 percent.
