Another blow to mid-state economy: Nissan furloughs Smyrna, Decherd workers

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (Mike Osborne) -- Middle Tennessee’s economy took another big hit with the announcement this week that Nissan is furloughing all of its production staff in Smyrna and Decherd.

CNN Businessquotes a Nissan North America spokesperson saying workers should seek unemployment benefits through at least the 27th of April. Nissan closed the plants in mid-March but kept workers on the payroll.

The GM assembly plant in Spring Hill has also halted production.

Gov. Bill Lee revealed Tuesday that some 250,000 Tennesseans have made initial claims for jobless benefits in the past three weeks. The first 100,000 are expected to recive their initial aid payment this week.
