Bredesen willing to work with Trump, but Tennessee his focus

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Phil Bredesen says he's willing to work with President Donald Trump but will put Tennessee first.

Bredesen appeared at an interfaith prayer lunch Sunday in Chattanooga. The former Tennessee governor is running against Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn.

Trump also was campaigning Sunday in Chattanooga on Blackburn's behalf.

In prepared remarks, Bredesen says Trump will "have plenty of derogatory things to say about me."

Bredesen says politics "is a blood sport — but I've come here to show that there are other ways to campaign ... We should vote people in and out, not shout them in and out."

Bredesen says he's not running against Trump, and if Trump "is for something that is good for Tennessee, I need to support him in that. If it's bad for Tennessee, I need to oppose him."
