Brian Wright and the Sneakups

Lapse of Luxury – May 8, 2020 Café Rooster Records

It’s been about a year since I first sat down with Brian Wright to talk about his new album, Lapse of Luxury. We were in the Roost, the recording shed at Café Rooster Records headquarters in Nashville with co producer / engineer Gabe Masterson was still tweaking the mixes at that point, but two songs were finished enough to share with WMOT’s listeners, “Poor Little Genius” and “What You Don’t Know” and now, the whole album is ready for everyone to turn up and dive into. Lapse of Luxury is out May 8th on Café Rooster and while it’s just now being released, it has a sense of nostalgia already. The song, “You Can’t Win a War Without Love” features a chorus of 400 fans singing along at the Basement East.

In April last year, I attended two of Brian Wright and the Sneak-Ups residency shows at the 5 Spot and fell in love with the songs and the energy of this band. We all miss those two venues and can’t wait to get back to live shows there. In the meantime, this album is a perfect example of what defines the collaborative music community in Nashville, Tennessee, including both the musicians and the fans.

The Sneak-Ups features Café Rooster recording artist, Jon Latham, Nashville singer-songwriter Kristen Englenz, who just released a solo record called Ingenue, Tommy Scifres, who also played bass with Brian Wright on guitar in Aaron Lee Tasjan’s band, Sally Jaye of Ladies Gun Club and Brian’s wife and co-founder of Café Rooster, Matty Alger on drums and Robbie Crowell who pretty much plays every instrument known to man and does it really well. Aaron Lee Tasjan and Seth Earnest appear on a couple of tracks, Anna Joy Harris and Ted Pecchio are each on a track as well.

I can’t really pick a stand out track, the album is something to behold in its entirety. From the dark and tragic story of “Heavy Metal Shed Kids” to the upbeat country feel of “Tractor Beam” and straight up rock n roll of “High Rise”, there is truly something for everyone on Lapse of Luxury.
