MLK Day events scheduled across Middle Tennessee

National Park Service

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE)  --  Martin Luther King Day is fast approaching.

The national holiday takes place on the third Monday each January and will be celebrated this year on Monday, January 21.

You might be surprised to learn that Nashville holds one of the oldest MLK Day marches in the country. A march and convocation has been organized in the mid-state each year since 1989 by the Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship.

We asked Lauren Breeze with Nashvillefunforfamilies.com to compile a list of local MLK Day events for us:

  • Thursday, – 10 AM to Noon – Attend Fisk's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation at the Fisk Memorial Chapel.
  • Thursday at Belmont, Lipscomb, and Vanderbilt. Each university is hosting lectures, workshops, and Teach-ins and all are open to the public.
  • Thursday, 7 PM – With a worship service led by Dr. Jamal Bryant and the Nashville Youth Choir at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church located at 1303 Hawkins Street
  • Saturday–  There will be a Youth Forum at the downtown Nashville Public library at 10 AM. This year’s theme “Beyond the March: A Life of Action” features youth leaders and activist Justin Jones.
