Nashville based Southern Baptist Convention launches response to sex abuse claims

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE) -- The Nashville based Southern Baptist Convention is responding to an ongoing struggle with a sexual abuse crisis.

SBC leaders will on Thursday host a conference in Dallas to introduce the denomination’s response; a new initiative called the Caring Well Challenge.

SBC President J.D. Greear, recently released a video explaining what the program will challenge local Baptist churches to do.

“The Challenge is 12 month, eight step process of first listening, then learning, then assessing and launching needed initiatives to ensure that a church is doing everything they can to prevent abuse and to care for abuse survivors.”

Pastor’s attending Thursday’s conference will hear from 10 survivors of sexual abuse. The Associated Press says several of those survivors have expressed mixed feelings about the gathering  -- hoping it represents a genuine desire for change and isn’t just an exercise in public relations.
