Nashville officials: No social distancing citations in spite of numerous Memorial Day violations

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  Nashville health officials said Tuesday they’re not quite ready to start issuing health citations just yet, after the city received 95 pandemic guideline violation complaints from residents over Memorial Day weekend.

During a press briefing Tuesday, Metro Health Department Director Dr. Michael Caldwell acknowledged problems, including at least one instance of patrons using a dance floor in a downtown bar. Nashville’s current guidelines prohibit bars or dance halls being used.

Metro launched Phase 2 of its Roadmap for Reopening Nashville Monday. The new plan allows for larger group gatherings, loosens capacity restrictions on restaurants and retail outlets, and permits close contact businesses to open within guidelines. However, bars, clubs, transportainment, playgrounds, dog parks, arcades and live entertainment involving more than two performers are still not permitted.

Dr. Caldwell said health inspectors will continue educating businesses on Phase 2 restrictions for now, but won’t hesitate to pass out citations to repeat offenders. Caldwell urged Nashvillians to continue reporting violations to the city.
