Anniversary of Tina Stewart Death

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  --  Friday marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Middle Tennessee State basketball standout Tina Stewart.  Stewart was stabbed to death by her roommate March 2, 2011.

MTSU Atheletic Director Chris Massaro said Stewart is still a very real presence for her team mates.

"She's with her teammates every day in their thoughts and in their prayers and so she's never really left in their minds. I think it's a very difficult day for her teammates and the coaching staff," Massaro said.

Former MTSU student Shanterrica Madden is set to be tried on first-degree murder charges in May in connection with Stewart's death. Madden maintains she stabbed Stewart in self-defense when the two first argued, then fought at their off-campus apartment.

There have been a number of developments in the case in recent weeks. Presiding Judge Don Ash announced two weeks ago that he would be bringing in a jury from another county to hear the case. Earlier this week Ash put a gag order in place, prohibiting attorneys from speaking to some media in an effort to keep the jury pool from being tainted.

Back in mid-February, both Stewart’s family and Madden filed lawsuits against the apartment complex where the two lived, saying the complex should have separated the women as their disagreements escalated.
