LAFAYETTE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A mid-state police officer discovered an explosive device in a car stopped for a traffic violation.

WSMV-TV quotes local officials saying an officer in LaFayette, Tennessee stopped the car last night for an expired license plate.

When the officer asked for permission to search the car he found the device in the passenger side floorboard. The device was described as a homemade explosive held together with duct tape.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol’s explosive ordinance team was called in to deal with the explosive.

Officials say the apparently intoxicated driver was arrested on several charges, including DUI and possession of an explosive device.

The LaFayette Police Department say it won’t be commenting further on the incident until its investigation is complete.
