Rutherford County Elections Administrator Fired

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The Rutherford County Election Commission has voted to dismiss its Elections Administrator.

The Daily News Journal reports council members voted 5-0 Monday night to fire Nicole Lester amid complaints that she wasn’t showing up for work.

Lester disputed the claims and would not rule out the possibility of filing a lawsuit over the dismissal.

Commissioners say they’ve consistently heard complaints about Lester’s work habits since she was hired in May, 2011. The Rutherford County Human Resources Office and County Mayor Ernest Burgess were reportedly among those complaining about Lester.

During Monday night’s meeting, a number of supporters spoke in support of Lester, and the former administrator noted that she has worked many overtime hours evenings and weekends.

The election commission says the $92,000 position may be advertised as early as Tuesday on the county website.
