MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Emergency services agencies across Rutherford County have teamed up to provide residents with an emergency alert service.
Called “Alert Rutherford” the service is free and is designed to provide immediate notification by cell phone, land line, text, email, or voice mail. Officials say they began searching for a system in the wake of the bombing at the Boston Marathon in 2013.
Everbridge, the company that provided Boston residents with emergency notifications following the bombing there was the vendor chosen to provide the service in Rutherford County.
Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans says the system will be used to warn of threatening weather, and much more.
“Maybe a hazmat situation on the interstate, or on one of our major thoroughfares, or if there’s possibly a criminal that’s on the loose in a specific neighborhood and we need to warn people to stay inside. Those immediate, life-saving action is required type messages are what we intend to use the system for.”
