Some economists warn that Hurricane Katrina will have economic impact far beyond the Gulf Coast region. David Wessel, deputy Washington bureau chief of The Wall Street Journal, says the inability to refine and distribute oil in hurricane-battered areas could negatively affect the economy nationally, including unemployment.

At least nine car bombs explode in Baghdad Wednesday, killing more than 150 and injuring hundreds. Iraq's arm of al Qaeda said in a statement that it was waging a suicide bombing campaign to avenge a U.S.-Iraqi military offensive against a rebel base.

Senate Approves Crawford to Head FDA
The Senate votes to approve Lester Crawford to be the next head of the Food and Drug Administration. Crawford has been acting commissioner since the spring of 2004. He becomes the official head of an agency that has been criticized for its inaction over controversial issues, including the delayed approval of emergency contraceptives.

Iraqis Need Better Security Recruits, Report Says
A joint study by inspectors general for the Pentagon and State Department says Iraq's police service needs to do a better job of recruiting. The 96-page report released Monday said poor vetting procedures have admitted recruits with criminal backgrounds and even insurgents planning terrorist attacks.

Attackers, reportedly dressed in Iraqi uniforms, kill a well-known Sunni Muslim tribal leader and several of his relatives. The Shiite-controlled government says its forces weren't involved in the deaths, which prompted an angry protest at a Sunni mosque.
