Tsunami Damage to Fisheries, Sea Life Widespread
Fishing communities along the Indian Ocean are reeling from the devastation wrought by Sunday's tsunami, and whole fishing fleets are in ruins. Offshore, fish communities could be equally devastated -- and the impact this will have on local fishing communities could be long-lasting. Rescuers Search for Survivors in Calif. Mudslide
Rescue crews pull four bodies out of the large mudslide in the coastal town of La Conchita, California. A Ventura County spokeswoman says crews have found nine people alive using specialized listening gear. From member station KCRW, Eric Roy reports.
Six Missing in Freighter Crash Near Alaska Coast
A freighter carrying nearly 500,000 gallons of fuel runs aground off the coast of Alaska in the Aleutian chain. A search continues for six crewmembers missing in the frigid Bering Sea. NPR's Elizabeth Arnold reports.

U.S. Forces Launch New Assault on Iraq Insurgents
The U.S. leads an operation against insurgents in an area south of Iraq's capital. Known as the "triangle of death," the region has been the scene of almost daily attacks on Iraqi government troops and police. NPR's Anne Garrels reports.
Vioxx Sparks Debate over Malpractice Reform
Following the recent removal of the drug Vioxx from the market, lawmakers are reconsidering a portion of medical malpractice reform. Caps in the malpractice bill would affect pharmaceutical and medical product manufacturers. Democrats oppose the caps, but Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) calls the situation a "feeding frenzy" for trial lawyers. NPR's Julie Rovner reports.

Israel Begins Pullout from Gaza Strip
The Israeli government formally notifies Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip they have 48 hours to leave their homes or be forcibly removed. Thousands of soldiers delivered eviction orders, but most settlers have refused to leave.

U.S. and Afghan Forces Lead Offensive against Taliban
American and Afghan forces are on the offensive as Afghanistan's September election approaches. Afghan security forces say they killed a number of insurgents over the weekend. And the U.S military has been searching for insurgents along the border with Pakistan. Knight-Ridder correspondent Jonathan Landay says the Taliban is offering stiff resistance, despite the U.S. offensive.
