Tennessee Named a Top State for Economic Development

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Tennessee is ranked one of the top states in the country for economic development, according to a national publication.

Area Development magazine picked the state for a 2012 Gold Shovel Award, along with Texas, South Carolina and Utah. The award goes annually to states that have achieved major success in job creation and economic impact. Tennessee also received the award in 2009.

Geraldine Gambale is the magazine’s editor. She says the award will put Tennessee on industry’s radar.

“Our readers are about 40,000 plus executives of mid-sized industrial companies...or consultants to industry who help these companies locate their facilities or expand their facilities."

Gambale says Tennessee is also getting an award for the 2011 Economic Development Project of the Year.  That award comes as a result of the $235 million General Motors re-investment in Spring Hill that’s expected to create 2,350 jobs.
