Traffic Alert: "Fast-Fix Eight" I-40 closures begin this weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The Tennessee Department of Transportation begins a bridge repair project in downtown Nashville this weekend that’s going to cause major traffic disruptions.

TDOT is calling this the “Fast-Fix Eight” project and it will completely close the south loop of Interstate 40 in downtown Nashville.

On 13 weekends over the next several months eight bridges spanning I-40 will undergo repairs. The four pairs of bridges are located at Charlotte Ave., Jo Johnson Ave. Clinton Street and Herman Street.

The first of those interstate closures and bridge repairs begins Friday evening at 8 p.m. and will continue through 6 a.m. Monday morning.

WMOT traffic reporter Randy O’Brien says the bridges are all at least 50 year old and badly in need of repair.

“These bridges are dangerous. They’ve had fall-ins, we’ve had pieces of concrete fall of them over the last couple of years especially. So it’s just going to make it safer for everybody’s travel, and smoother once we get through this particular project.”

Randy says there will be detours set up, but suggests travelers avoid the area if at all possible.
