Heal the Music Day set for late October

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Heal the Music Day is now set for Octoer 20. Mayor Megan Barry recently made it official with a city proclamation.

Heal the Music Day is being billed as an opportunity for the music industry to lend a hand to artists who don’t have access to health care. Artists and industry related businesses and organizations are being encouraged to donate 5 percent of their October 20 earnings.

Rodney Crowell originated the idea, likening it to paying a tithe at church.

Proceeds will go to the non-profit Music Health Alliance. The Alliance provides medical assistance to the music community’s self-employed who don’t have access to insurance.

Justine Avila (AV-ih-luh) with the Music City Music Council says Heal the Music Day is a timely effort.

“Due to all the health care legislation going on on the federal level… That October 20 date will be around open enrollment, so I think the timing is excellent.

Avila says a lot of artists have already signed on, including some well-known performers.

“There’s a ton of musicians on board ranging from local and small musicians to the huge Keith Urbans and Dierk Bentleys of the world contributing from their shows on that date.”

Avila says Music Health Alliance provides emergency health care funds to struggling artists, and is also helping artists get signed up for federal health marketplace policies.
