MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  A growing number of Tennessee universities chose Wednesday to close their campuses and continue the school year online as the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a world pandemic.

Late Wednesday, Middle Tennessee State University, Trevecca Nazarene Univeristy and the University of Tennessee system of schools all announced that they would extend spring break. They also informed students to plan on continuing their studies online when classes resume.

Vanderbilt and Belmont universities announced earlier this week that students would not return to campus following spring break and that classes would be moved online.

Nashville State reported on Wednesday that a student has been diagnosed with COVID-19. In a statement on the school's website, school administrators note that the student fell ill this week while the college is on spring break.

The statement goes on to say the college will remain closed for what is described as a "hospital-grade deep cleaning." The statement does not say whether the school will remain closed beyond this week.
