Madden Murder Trial Set for January 31

(AP) Shanterrica Madden was not able to reach a plea agreement with prosecuters this morning.

Madden is charged with first degree murder in the death of her college roommate, MTSU Basketball standout Tina Stewart.

According to police, Stewart was stabbed to death during a fight the two had in their Murfreesboro apartment March 2nd.  Madden says she acted in self-defense.

Her attorney, Joe Brandon Jr., tells WMOT News he doesn’t think the prosecution can make a case for first degree murder, because they would have to prove pre-meditation.

During a brief hearing this morning, attorneys agreed to continue moving toward a Jan. 31 trial. A motions hearing is set for Nov. 28.

Madden also faces a $20 million wrongful death lawsuit from Stewart's parents.
