Tenn. Loses More Manufacturing Jobs

Tennessee lost more than 56 hundred manufacturing jobs over the past year, and that’s actually good news.  The state lost four times that number of industrial jobs in the previous year.

The business directory, the Tennessee Manufacturers Register, says the state lost about 1.5 percent of its manufacturing jobs. The register says Tennessee is now home to just over 7200 manufacturers employing right at 375,ooo thousand workers.

The report’s author, Manufacturing News, sees the numbers as a positive sign, showing that the recovery is gaining momentum in Tennessee. The report also says Tennessee’s  "…low business costs and educated workforce have been a draw for a variety of enterprises."

The report cites several job creation bright spots in the past year, including the expansion of Nissan's Smyrna plant; the establishment of a new Eastman Chemical plant in Kingsport; and Volkswagen’s recent hiring of the 2,000th employee at its new plant in Chattanooga.
