Million Dollar Gift to MTSU Athletics

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) – A big weekend on several fronts for Blue Raider sports.

The Middle Tennessee men’s basketball team beat UT Martin on Saturday evening 78-62 at home.

The Lady Raiders matched that win, outscoring Xavier to claim a 65-49 victory Friday night in Cincinnati.

That win made sweeter still as the MTSU head women’s basketball coach Rick Insell was named one of 10 inductees into the 2012 class of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

All of that capped off by the announcement Sunday that Middle Tennessee athletics has received a $1 million donation from the estate of Jeff Hendrix.

Assistant Athletic Director Alan Farley says Hendrix was a big MT sports booster and a personal friend.

"Jeff was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer back in April of 2010. What followed was really a heroic battle, but he did lose his battle with cancer 13 months later in May of this last year."

MTSU says the gift is the largest unrestricted donation in the Athletic Department’s history. It will be used to construct a new stadium club at Floyd Stadium, which will be named after Hendrix.
