Amazon Breaks Ground in Murfreesboro Thursday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Online retail giant Amazon.com will break ground in Murfreesboro Thursday afternoon on a new distribution center.

State Senators Bill Ketron and Jim Tracey, Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess, and Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg are all scheduled to attend.

Amazon has made a significant investment in Tennessee in recent months, including a one million-square-foot operation in the Chattanooga area that employs 1,700 people, and a facility in Bradley County that employs 400.

Mayor Bragg says he hopes other high-profile companies will follow Amazon’s lead.

“I think that puts a spotlight on Murfreesboro and Rutherford County. It shows other people that if a company here in the top-ten of our business community in America locates in our region, then it’s going to make a difference for others and hopefully they’ll give us another look also.”

Bragg said Amazon has promised to hire 1300 workers for the Murfreesboro facility. The groundbreaking for the new fulfillment center will take place Thursday at 2 p.m. at 1800 Joe B. Jackson Parkway.
