Proposal Restricts Access to Teacher Evaluations

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A bill that would restrict public access to Tennessee teacher evaluation data is headed for a full Senate vote.

The Senate State and Local Government Committee voted 7-0 Tuesday to advance the bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Jim Tracy of Shelbyville.

Tracy says his bill repairs an oversight in the original legislation governing the new system of teacher evaluations.

“We found out by accident, actually, that these evaluations would go into the teacher file and the teacher file is open to…open records. So people could go in their file and see their evaluations and that’s not what we wanted to do.”

Tracy says the evaluations are meant to be helpful to teacher s and should only be accessible to teachers and administrators.
