More College Tuition Hikes Likely on the Way

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — University students in Tennessee are likely facing still more tuition increases.

The finance committee of the state Board of Regents met Tuesday and unanimously recommended increases at its six universities, 13 community colleges and 27 technology centers.

The proposed hikes vary in size, with East Tennessee State University seeing the highest increase at 7.2 percent. Austin Peay made the smallest request at 3.4 percent.

Students here at Middle Tennessee State University would see a 6.8 percent tuition increase if the plan is approved.

MTSU Spokesman Andrew Oppmann says inflation and the continuing drop in funding from the State is driving the increases. He says the school is doing what it can to help students cope.

“We’re trying to reach out to insure that they can get the fastest path to degree completion as possible. That allows them to make the maximum use of their dollars that their spending, but also that they’re taking the courses that they truly need to get the degree that they want.”

The proposed increases will be presented to the full Regents board when it meets later this month.
