Tuition Increases Approved for TBR Schools

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  --  The Tennessee Board of Regents has voted to increase tuition at the system’s six universities, 13 colleges and 27 technical schools.

The Regents approved the measure in Memphis on Friday during their quarterly meeting.

Students at the University of Memphis will see the largest increase, paying $269 more per semester. TBR community college students will see an increase of $75  to $85 per semester.

In a press statement, the TBR says each school requested increases based on its particular needs.

Middle Tennessee State University reports that most of its 6.8% increase will go toward correcting a growing imbalance between the number of fulltime, tenure-track professors, and contract instructors. MTSU spokesman Andrew Oppmann says just four years ago, three-fourths of MTSU professors were tenure track.

“That ratio’s changed from 74 percent core faculty to 26 percent today. This growing imbalance really threatens program accreditation, it diminishes access to student advising, and it narrows the capacity of our high demand graduate programs.

Tennessee’s other public higher education system raised tuition last week. Students attending University of Tennessee affiliated schools will see increases this fall that range up to eight percent.
