Nashville makes interim police chief's role permanent

MNPD

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nashville Interim Police Chief John Drake has emerged from a national search to become the permanent leader of the growing city’s police force.

Mayor John Cooper announced Monday that Drake won the police chief job after serving in the role in the interim since August.

He replaced former Police Chief Steve Anderson, who retired after calls for his resignation amid the nationwide outcry for changes in policing after George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis police custody.

Drake is a Black Nashville native who has served more than three decades in the department. He promised better community engagement and recruitment of more diverse candidates.
