Chattanooga Approves Domestic Benefits for Workers

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Officials in Chattanooga have given final approval to a measure that extends health benefits for city workers to same-sex partners.

WDEF-TV (http://bit.ly/1cGoKlj) reports the measure passed Tuesday in a 5-3 vote.

Councilman Chris Anderson, who had proposed the ordinance, called the decision a victory for the city.

Opponents say they are gathering signatures on a petition in an effort to force a referendum on the issue.

The vote makes Chattanooga the third city in Tennessee to expand benefits to same-sex couples, after Collegedale and Knoxville.
