NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) -- Vanderbilt University has pushed back hard against a new directive from the Trump Administration that could see international students deported this fall.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement this week notified colleges that any international students taking classes online -- rather than in-person -- will lose their student visas.
Administration officials argue the move will make it easier for universities to implement social distancing.
Vanderbilt on Tuesday responded saying the directive’s impact “will be devastating.”
The university says the move will limit its options for keeping students safe as they study. Vanderbilt also argued the directive will hamper Vanderbilt’s ability to attract “the world’s best and brightest” scholars to conduct innovative research.
The Associated Press reports that Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Wednesday filed a lawsuit seeking to block the rule.
