MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennessee is ranked once again as the worst state in the nation for people with allergies.

Three Tennessee communities made the list of the top-ten worst cities for people who suffer from allergies. Knoxville topped the list for the third year in a row. Memphis and Chattanooga also made the top ten while Nashville was ranked 45th.

The yearly report is based on research conducted by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The study looks at the average daily air-borne pollen count, the number of people taking allergy medications, and the ratio between the number of allergists and patients.

Murfreesboro Allergist Dr. Csaba Rusznak said this year’s allergy season is off to challenging start.

“It’s primarily because we had a very mild winter," Rusznak said.  "You see that almost all the trees are blooming now and tree pollens are very important reasons for these allergy symptoms which many patients experience at this time of the year. So this spring season has been particularly bad for most of our patients.

Dr. Rusznak said there are now some excellent over the counter remedies available, and allergists can offer several effective treatment options for those with more severe symptoms.
