Flooding in East Tennessee

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Much of West Tennessee is still suffering under drought conditions, but in East Tennessee the problem is too much water.

Emergency management officials in the Johnson City area report rescue crews used inflatable boats yesterday and overnight to reach people trapped in their homes and on flooded streets.

Dean Fleanor is with Tennessee State Emergency Management.

“The weather system that impacted East Tennessee yesterday dumped nine inches of rain plus in a short amount of time. Particularly in Washington County, Unicoi County, Carter County, Green County and Sullivan Count.”

Johnson City Schools didn’t open  as planned today because of the storm damage. The Johnson City Press reports the city’s Mall parking lot was covered by high water, stranding numerous vehicles.

Houses and apartments in several areas are reportedly surrounded by water.
