NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Emergency Management Agency officials now say that 27 people around the state have died as a result of last week's ice storm and bone-chilling low temperatures.

State officials say at least nine of the victims died as a result of hypothermia.

Schools remained closed in many counties and thousands were still without power Monday as Tennesseans struggled to recover from one of the worst winter storms in memory.

Chain saw crews that included the Tennessee National Guard were deployed to clear downed trees in eight counties on the Cumberland Plateau.

The National Weather Service is forecasting more snow for east Tennessee. The latest forecast said some portions of the eastern part of the state could get up to 3 inches.
