Ruth. County Hosts 4200 Athletes for Spring Fling

MUFREESBORO, Tenn (Nelson)  -- Thousands of student athletes from across the state have converged on Rutherford County for the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s 2012 Spring Fling sponsored by Blue Cross.

Spring Fling is Tennessee’s annual high school sports tournament and this is the sixth year it’s been held in Rutherford County.

TSSAA’s Matthew Gillespie tells WMOT news,

“Murfreesboro has always been such a welcoming city to all the fans and the competitors who come in and that just really makes us want to keep coming back…”

This year’s event will include the five spring sports: baseball, soccer, tennis, softball, and track and field. More than 4200 athletes will participate.

According to the Daily News Journal, the Rutherford County Chambers of Commerce says the tournament will bring an estimated $3.5 million into the community.

Spring Fling got underway Monday and will come to a close on Friday.

Over the five-day period, events will be held at several locations including LaVergne, Smyrna, and on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
