MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Several Middle Tennessee school systems will be watched more closely by the state following the release of this year’s educational assessment scores.
Metro Nashville is the only mid-state system with schools that scored in the bottom five percent of all assessments. As a result, six metro schools are subject to state intervention.
A much larger number of Middle Tennessee schools were named to what the state’s calling its “priority” list, because assessments revealed significant educational disparities between student groups within those system.
For example, Bedford County made the priority list because the system’s Hispanic students scored well below other students on assessments. Coffee County was placed on the same list because its handicapped students fared poorly.
Three mid-state school systems were singled out for special praise. Rutherford, Marshall, and Smith Counties all were named to the state’s “exemplary” list, for showing marked improvement in the yearly assessments.
