How Many Tennesseans Will Die on Blackout Wednesday?

MADD Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennesseans are a week away from one of the most dangerous driving days of the year.

Officials have started referring to the day before Thanksgiving as Blackout Wednesday, because of the number of impaired drivers on the road.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving says the number of people killed in drunk driving crashes over the Thanksgiving holiday spikes by 30 percent compared to the rest of the year.

Flint Klaus is MADD’s Tennessee Director.

“Everyone plan your evenings out. Plan your holiday. If you know you’re going to be drinking, just like you’re lining up a baby sitter, line up how you’re going to get home safely.”

Drunk driving is a personal issue for Klaus. His grandmother was killed by an impaired driver ten years ago.

“It’s changed my habits. It’s changed how I talk to other people. Designated drivers are very important to me. All victims appreciate those who step up to save the lives of others.”

Klaus says MADD is looking for a Tennessee legislator to sponsor a bill in the upcoming General Assembly that would require a breath test lockout device on the cars of all drunk driving offenders.
