Murf. Man Drowns in Stones River, Third Incident This Week

MFD

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Murfreesboro police, fire and rescue units were dispatched to the Stones River at Manson Pike for the third time in as many days Tuesday, this time with tragic results.

Witnesses noticed 19 year-old James Patton floating down the river at around 5 p.m. and pulled him from the water. The Cricket Lane man was later pronounced dead at Middle Tennessee Medical Center.

Police suspect Patton may have struck a submerged object as he jumped into the river while swimming.

On Sunday, two boys were rescued from the same stretch of the river after unusually high, swift water left them stranded an unable to reach shore. On Monday, another boy was rescued from the river after he was nearly swept over the Manson Pike Dam.

A police report on Patton’s death says foul play is not suspected, but an investigation in to the circumstances of his drowning will continue.
